UNC Kenan-Flagler Profiles

Success Story Videos completed production on a series of marketing videos for the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School. In the final weeks of the Spring 2010 semester, we followed the activities of four second-year MBA students to reveal actual experiences at UNC-Chapel Hill. The marketing communications department at Kenan-Flagler elected to use the documentary style to create short profiles that appeal to prospective applicants to the program. The goal is to depict what sets UNC Kenan-Flagler apart. It was a pleasure to work with Chris Carmichael Multimedia on these productions.

News21: Powering A Nation

Twelve of the nation’s top journalism schools join in this unique program to experiment with forms of in-depth and investigative reporting. Students travel the country to report on critical issues facing our changing nation and then find innovative ways to tell those stories. The project is part of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education’s News21 program. UNC-Chapel Hill was in its first of three years under this grant when I was selected for the summer 2009 fellowship.

Powering A Nation explores U.S. energy use and its relationship to the country’s demographics. The site reports on climate refugees, wind farms, the electrical grid, mountaintop removal, coal activists, religious response, biofuels and other topics. Ten reporters consulted with each other and faculty coaches to determine the best story forms to execute for the multiple elements in each topic.

Andaman Rising

When the Asian tsunami hit southern Thailand in 2004, the sea that had sustained the region for generations—the Andaman—rose up, destroying families and killing thousands. Three-and-a-half years later, a team of journalists set out for the seaside province of Phang-nga to document the lives and culture of people living by the Andaman. They found a people marked—but not defined—by disaster, a people who have taken on challenges and risen above them.
