Biofuels and the Florida reed-weed debate

An Atlanta bio-energy development company has found a way to mass-produce giant cane as a source for alternative fuels. But weed watchers in Florida are worried that the fast-growing grass could also be a dangerous invader.

News21: Powering A Nation

Twelve of the nation’s top journalism schools join in this unique program to experiment with forms of in-depth and investigative reporting. Students travel the country to report on critical issues facing our changing nation and then find innovative ways to tell those stories. The project is part of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education’s News21 program. UNC-Chapel Hill was in its first of three years under this grant when I was selected for the summer 2009 fellowship.

Powering A Nation explores U.S. energy use and its relationship to the country’s demographics. The site reports on climate refugees, wind farms, the electrical grid, mountaintop removal, coal activists, religious response, biofuels and other topics. Ten reporters consulted with each other and faculty coaches to determine the best story forms to execute for the multiple elements in each topic.
